How to Evaluate a CNC Machining Partner for OEM Parts

If you are an OEM engineer or buyer about to send precision parts drawings to outside shops, this guide helps you evaluate each candidate CNC machining company on evidence before anything is released. Why identical-looking vendor pages produce bad shortlists

You are not alone in this. The pattern usually runs like this:

The ten-criteria evaluation checklist

1. Process fit

Ask: does the shop name the specific processes your part needs - turning, 3-axis/4-axis milling, Swiss-type for small complex parts, wire EDM for profiles and slots? 2. Engineering support before production

3. Quality system in writing

4. Inspection method and records

10. Scale-up path

Ask: if the prototype works, what changes when quantities grow - process, inspection, price? The honest answer describes what stays identical (process, inspection method) and what changes (batch flow, lead time). Vague answers here surface later as surprise requalifications.

Boundaries: what this checklist does not decide

Worksheet results are structural judgments, not outcome guarantees. Scoring high on evidence does not guarantee better prices, on-time delivery or part acceptance - those need signed quotes, audits and, where your program requires them, certificates.
