If a CNC part drawing is about to leave your desk for quoting or prototyping, this guide explains what a design-for-manufacturability (DFM) review covers and gives you an eight-point self-check to run on that drawing first. If your part is still a concept without a drawing, or your team already runs a formal DFM process with your suppliers, you will not need much of this - go straight to your existing flow. A DFM review is a structured pass over the drawing by manufacturing eyes: it questions tolerance callouts, wall thicknesses, tool access and finish specs while changes still cost desk time instead of tooling time. What a DFM review actually is
Between "drawing done" and "parts made" sits a translation step: someone must read your design intent and map it onto real machines, cutters, fixtures and inspection equipment. That mapping is the DFM review. It asks questions like:
- Can every feature be reached by a cutter, and can every tolerance actually be measured?
- Are tight tolerances called out where the function needs them - or everywhere, which multiplies inspection and scrap risk?
- Are wall sections, corner radii and thread specs standard for the material and process?
- Does the stated quantity match a process that makes sense - one-off prototype thinking versus repeat production thinking?
A DFM review is worth running while the drawing can still change at desk cost. The same questions asked after first articles exist become engineering changes, and engineering changes are where prototype schedules go to slip.
The eight-point self-check
Run this on one current drawing, now. Flag and resolve self-check items before the drawing leaves your team.
- Tolerance audit. Mark every tight tolerance and ask: which functional requirement does it serve? Tight tolerances only cost money where they are called out and not needed - general-profile tolerances are fine for the rest.
- Datum logic. Are datums the surfaces the part actually locates from in your assembly? Machined-in datums that mismatch assembly datums invite inspection arguments later.
- Tool access. Can a standard cutter reach every pocket, slot and hole? Deep, narrow pockets and cross-features may need special setups - say so explicitly instead of letting the shop discover them.
- Wall thickness and corners. Are walls and internal radii compatible with the material and process? Thin sections distort; sharp internal corners are impossible in milled parts and may point to wire EDM instead.
- Threads and standard features. Are threads, undercuts and countersinks fully specified (size, depth, class)? "Tapped hole" without data is one of the most common quote-question generators.
- Finish callouts. Are anodize, plating, passivation or polishing requirements stated with the surfaces they apply to? Finishing is commonly done through qualified partners, so masked areas need to be explicit.
- Quantity and stage honesty. Does the drawing or RFQ state prototype, pilot and annual quantities? DFM feedback for 10 pieces differs from feedback for 10,000 - vendors need the real numbers.
- Open questions list. Attach a short list of the things you are unsure about. A drawing with named open questions gets better feedback than one that pretends to be final.
What a review cannot fix
A DFM review works on the drawing you have. It cannot fix fundamental geometry that fights the process, and it cannot substitute for program requirements: if your program needs a certified quality system, ask the shop for the certificate itself - a statement of working "to ISO 9001 principles", like the one on Golden Rainbow's site, describes practice, not certification. Passing the self-check does not guarantee zero revision loops; it removes the drivers that were visible from your side of the desk.
